Ulster Hospital ASB Unit
Client: Avanti Architects & Kennedy Fitzgerald Architects
Designed by Kennedy Fitzgerald Architects & Avanti Architects, the new Phase B2 Inpatient Ward Block at the Ulster Hospital is part of a £261m redevelopment providing modern healthcare accommodation to replace the 1960s main ward block. This 30,000m² facility includes 12 wards with 288 single en-suite bedrooms, 4 Day Surgery Suites, 3 Endoscopy Suites, a Cardiac Catheterisation Suite, Pharmacy, and public amenities such as a café. The building demonstrates a patient-centered, fully integrated design approach.
The imagery highlights the building’s restrained material palette of glazing, ceramic cladding panels, and engineering brick, as well as the central landscaped courtyard divided by a four-storey glazed walkway linking the support hub. Large full-height windows maximize natural light, offering patients and staff views of the surrounding fields and landscaped courtyards with integrated artwork, enhancing wellbeing and therapeutic outcomes.
