In early August of 2013, I met with Belfast’s then Lord Mayor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir. We discussed a fly on the wall photography project that would allow the people of Belfast and, indeed, a global audience a glimpse into the life of Belfast’s First Citizen. The project would span Máirtín’s remaining term in office and involve a huge amount of personal interaction between him, his staff and me.

After my third visit in late August, it became obvious just what a massive responsibility the role of the Mayor is. Relentless meetings, long hours and constant social media updates were signs that this was a man who had a distinct purpose and clear vision of a better Belfast – a shared Belfast.
