The Lighthouse Project
Client: Bradley McClure Architects
The Lighthouse Project in Byker Estate, Newcastle, delivers a bold contemporary extension and refurbishment by Bradley McClure Architects of Belfast. It pairs warm wood cladding with robust corten steel. Moreover, it transforms the former St Michael’s Church into a dynamic youth and community hub, specifically designed with children and young peoples charities in mind. The team created the project to meet the urgent need for purpose-built facilities for kids in Byker. It now offers adaptable spaces shaped by the community, for the community.
The project involved the restoration and refurbishment of St Michaels church, along with a modern timber-framed extension. The dedicated space sparks aspiration and ownership. Additionally, the site introduces activity and sports facilities throughout the grounds including a new MUGA pitch. These spaces drive meaningful engagement for up to 1,500 young people and families each year. Furthermore, the project centres on three core principles: Hospitality, Aspiration, and Partnership. These principles power its mission to empower young people, strengthen local organisations, and reduce deprivation in the heart of Byker.
