Client: Studio idir

This rural Glenavy house, designed by Studio Idir, creates a tranquil environment for retirement living, where independence, comfort, and a deep connection to nature are central. The internal spaces flow seamlessly to the outdoors, allowing inhabitants to engage with the surrounding flora and fauna, enjoy views over newly formed ponds, and experience the gentle rhythms of rural life near Lough Neagh.

The imagery highlights the house’s natural cedar-shingle cladding, softly weathering to grey, its timber frame construction, and the way two vernacular forms—one for living, one for sleeping—are connected by a glazed entrance link. Special attention was given to framing views, capturing natural light, and illustrating how neutral tones, rounded edges, and carefully placed windows create a harmonious backdrop to daily life.

Both the house and its custom furniture support the owners’ interests in gardening, crafting, reading, and hospitality, while maintaining a quiet, calm aesthetic that lets the landscape and lived experiences remain the focus.

This project was shortlisted for the RSUA Design Awards 2024, demonstrating Studio Idir’s commitment to sensitive, site-responsive design. To see more examples of Studio Idir’s work, explore my portfolio and search for Studio Idir projects.
