The Keep
Client: Like Architects
The Keep, formerly the Classic/Gaumont Cinema in Belfast, is a striking example of expressive and opulent early- to mid-twentieth-century architecture. Designed by Like Architects, the project preserves the building’s cinematic grandeur while reinterpreting its historic character through a contemporary lens.
The imagery captures the building’s angular forms, folded planes, and the faceted architectural treatment that references the medieval map and original arcade within Castle Buildings. This design approach creates a dialogue between the historic Belfast Corner and a modern architectural response, integrating Castle Arcade’s connections from Castle Place to Castle Lane.
The Keep demonstrates how historic urban context can be sensitively reimagined, maintaining the visual drama of cinema and theatre architecture while creating contemporary, functional spaces.
